2026 Mazda CX-5 vs Hyundai Tucson in Canada
The verdict: Tucson Hybrid for fuel savings, CX-5 for its cabin and mileage coverage
Choose Tucson Hybrid when you want an AWD hybrid now and fuel costs are a major part of your budget. Choose the redesigned CX-5 when its cabin, equipment and unlimited-mileage warranty suit you better, and the purchase-price difference pays for its higher fuel use. At the published Canadian combined figures, the Tucson uses enough less gasoline to make a substantial difference for a regular commuter.
This comparison covers the redesigned 2026 Canadian Mazda CX-5 and 2026 Canadian Hyundai Tucson. Mazda's current CX-5 has a gasoline powertrain. Its official FAQ confirms that a hybrid launches in 2027. The purchase comparison today is therefore CX-5 gasoline versus Tucson Hybrid; the future Mazda hybrid has its own specifications and price to establish. The shortlist: match equipment, then compare the fuel bill
| What you want | Mazda candidate | Hyundai candidate |
|---|---|---|
| AWD, power liftgate, heated wheel and power driver's seat | CX-5 GS | Tucson N Line Hybrid |
| Leather, rear-seat heating and front-seat ventilation | CX-5 GT | Tucson Ultimate Hybrid |
| Surround-view parking camera and panoramic roof | CX-5 GT with Panoramic Roof and Premium packages | Tucson Ultimate Hybrid |
| A gasoline-only SUV comparison | CX-5 GS | Tucson Preferred with Trend Package |
The hybrid-versus-gas decision is built into the first three pairs. The fourth lets you compare gasoline candidates separately if purchase budget leads you there. Sources: Mazda's Canadian equipment walk, pages 17-18 and Hyundai's 2026 trim progression, pages 2-5.
The 2026 CX-5 deserves a fresh look
Older CX-5 comparisons do not describe this cabin. The redesigned Canadian model has a 12.9-inch touchscreen, with a 15.6-inch display available through the GT Premium Package. Its rear seat splits 40/20/40. That centre section gives you a useful loading option for long items while keeping the two outboard rear seats available. Mazda's 2026 specifications, pages 17-18.
GS is a strong place to start for shared drivers: it adds a power driver's seat with memory and a windshield-projected Active Driving Display, Mazda's head-up display. Tucson N Line Hybrid includes a panoramic roof, heated rear seats and Bose audio; driver memory and a head-up display arrive at Ultimate Hybrid. Those are different equipment priorities, even before you price the powertrains. Mazda's GS equipment, page 18; Hyundai's N Line and Ultimate equipment, pages 4-5.
If you want ventilated front seats, both CX-5 GT and Tucson Ultimate Hybrid provide them. If you also want the surround-view camera, the Mazda quote needs its Premium Package, which requires the Panoramic Roof Package. Tucson Ultimate includes the panoramic roof and surround-view monitor in its trim equipment. That is why a basic GT price is not the complete equipment match for an Ultimate quote. Mazda's GT options, page 18; Hyundai Ultimate Hybrid, page 5.
Try both interfaces with your phone and the functions you use every day. Check how you change the temperature, select audio and follow navigation. Mazda's redesign earns a new assessment; decide on the cabin in the actual 2026 vehicle.
Tucson Hybrid brings more published power as well as lower consumption
| 2026 Canadian AWD configuration | Powertrain | Published output | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| CX-5 GX, GS or GT | 2.5-litre gasoline | 187 hp | Six-speed automatic |
| Tucson N Line or Ultimate Hybrid | 1.6-litre turbo hybrid | 231 hp | Six-speed automatic |
| Tucson Preferred / Trend Package | 2.5-litre gasoline | 187 hp | Eight-speed automatic |
Sources: Mazda's engine and equipment specifications, pages 15 and 17 and Hyundai's gasoline/hybrid product card.
The Hyundai hybrid is the higher-output choice in this comparison. Both use a familiar fill-and-drive routine. Tucson's conventional hybrid needs no plug or home charger.
Repeat a low-speed stretch, a hill and a highway merge in each. Assess throttle response, gear changes, engine sound and braking. Choose CX-5 for the drive you prefer if it earns the additional running cost; a brand's driving reputation should not make that decision for you.
The fuel gap is $736 a year at 20,000 km
Mazda publishes 9.9 city / 7.9 highway / 9.0 combined L/100 km for the 2026 CX-5. Hyundai identifies 6.7 L/100 km combined as the 2026 Tucson Hybrid's NRCan rating. The comparison below uses combined against combined. Sources: Mazda's Canadian fuel table, page 16 and Hyundai's model-year-specific fuel note.
At 20,000 km a year and an illustrative $1.60/L gasoline price:
| Calculated fuel cost | CX-5 at 9.0 L/100 km | Tucson Hybrid at 6.7 L/100 km |
|---|---|---|
| Litres per year | 1,800 | 1,340 |
| Annual fuel bill | $2,880 | $2,144 |
| Five-year fuel bill | $14,400 | $10,720 |
Tucson's calculated saving is $3,680 over five years. At 10,000 km annually it is $1,840; at 30,000 km it is $5,520. Those amounts use the published combined figures with annual distance and fuel price held constant.
That gives the Tucson Hybrid a substantial case at commuter mileage. It also sets a useful test for the Mazda quote: a CX-5 priced $3,680 lower would offset the illustrated five-year fuel difference at 20,000 km annually, before financing, insurance, maintenance and resale differences.
How much extra can the Tucson Hybrid justify?
Compare the complete purchase totals of the exact equipment combinations above. Use this fuel-only yardstick at $1.60/L:
| Annual driving | Tucson's calculated annual fuel saving | Years to recover a hypothetical $3,000 higher purchase total |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 km | $368 | 8.2 years |
| 20,000 km | $736 | 4.1 years |
| 30,000 km | $1,104 | 2.7 years |
The $3,000 is an example price difference, not a vehicle offer. Replace it with your quotes. Add financing interest and insurance over the same period, then assess scheduled servicing and the equipment you gain. Keep an estimated future sale value on its own line so you can see whether the answer depends on it.
At low annual mileage, CX-5 has more room to win through purchase price and the cabin you prefer. At high mileage, Tucson's lower fuel use carries more of the decision. The hybrid-versus-gas guide develops the premium calculation, and the payment calculator compares actual borrowing costs.
Warranty: Hyundai gives you more years, Mazda removes the mileage cap
| Canadian coverage category | Mazda | Hyundai |
|---|---|---|
| General new-vehicle warranty | 3 years / unlimited kilometres | 5 years / 100,000 km |
| Powertrain warranty | 5 years / unlimited kilometres | 5 years / 100,000 km |
Hyundai's time/distance limits end coverage at whichever arrives first. Its radio/sound systems and paint have separate three-year/60,000-km terms. Mazda's unlimited mileage applies to the listed warranty categories, within their time periods. Sources: Mazda Canada warranty and Hyundai Canada warranty.
At 20,000 km a year from new, Hyundai's general limit reaches five years; Mazda's reaches three. For an ordinary five-year ownership plan, Hyundai offers the longer general coverage period.
At 40,000 km a year, Hyundai reaches 100,000 km after 2.5 years. Mazda's general warranty continues to its three-year limit, and its powertrain warranty continues to five years without a kilometre cap. That is a real Mazda advantage for someone covering a lot of ground. It belongs beside the extra fuel cost in the buying decision.
Check the redesigned Mazda's space with your own load
Mazda's specification sheet gives the new CX-5 a 2,815-mm wheelbase and 1,012 mm of rear legroom. Those are measurements for the redesigned 2026 model, not the previous generation. Mazda's dimensions, page 16.
Use that extra space as a reason to revisit the CX-5, then do the same family check in both SUVs. Put the driver's seat in its normal position and seat the regular passenger behind it. Fit your child seats and load your stroller, dog crate or holiday bags with the rear seats in the positions you need.
On the Mazda, try the centre rear-seat section with a long item and two rear passengers. On both vehicles, check the liftgate opening, the room left around your usual load and the roof clearance when the liftgate opens. Your load is the useful measure: the vehicle needs to carry it in the seating arrangement you actually use.
Choose today's SUV on today's specifications
Tucson N Line Hybrid is the starting Hyundai alternative to CX-5 GS. Ultimate Hybrid is the one to price against GT with the comfort and parking equipment you want. The Tucson makes its strongest case for a regular commuter who wants hybrid fuel use now. The CX-5 earns its place through the redesigned cabin, the equipment combination and Mazda's mileage coverage, particularly when its quote offsets the running-cost difference.
Open current Tucson listings, select the exact 2026 hybrid trim, and compare its purchase total with the specified Mazda trim and packages. Use the Tucson trim guide to check equipment. If you decide to wait for Mazda's hybrid, make that a separate 2027 launch decision rather than assigning future fuel savings to a 2026 gasoline CX-5.
