Think about a normal week. Who rides with you? Where do you park? What do you carry? The best place to start is the job your next car needs to do.

Pick three must-haves. Maybe that’s room for two child seats, a comfortable commute and space for the dog. Keep a second list for the nice-to-haves. It makes a tempting car much easier to judge.

Set a budget you can live with

Add insurance, fuel, maintenance and parking to the monthly payment. That’s the number you’ll live with after the excitement of buying wears off.

Start with the affordability calculator, then try a few prices in the payment calculator. Compare the interest as well as the payment. A longer loan can make a car look cheaper each month while costing more overall.

Compare the whole quote

Ask each seller for the same breakdown. It’s much easier to compare two cars when the numbers are laid out the same way.

Adjust the seat. Sit in the back. Load the stroller. Try parking it. A test drive should answer your everyday questions, not just show you that the car moves.

Read it before you sign it

Match the agreement to the quote. Check the exact car, the deposit terms, any financing conditions and the pickup date. Promised repairs or accessories belong in writing.

Take time to get answers to anything that doesn’t line up. Keep a copy of the agreement and leave knowing what happens next.
